The Sound Of Music, Poetry, and My Ex-Mother-N-Law

by Nancy A. Lamkin
(Medford, OR)

Petra, Wife of Duane Chase and I met in Medford, OR., I was a waitress serving her and a guest lunch. As a child, I believe, yearly I would watch with, I am sure most of America, The Sound Of Music. I dreamt of running from my oppressors, my abusive family. I figured from the very first time I watched the movie that if little children could run from guns I could one day run too. At age fifteen I did, and later in life found my own Julie Andrews,(Maria). Who's by coincidence favorite movie of all time is The Sound Of Music.

At the time I met Petra she was my mother-n-law, now ex, but still mom. We shared a love, this amazing story, this movie. While at first meet I spoke to Petra not knowing that she was married to Duane, but spoke of poetry. I recited one and at her request others, and at her request mailed these poems to her.

I brought up to her the movie The Sound Of Music and spoke of my love for it. In return for the poetry Petra sent me three pictures signed, one of the the whistle moment, one of the stair moment, and one of Maria with the Mayor of Salzburg. This gift was very special because I was able to gift it to My Maria, My Mother-n-law of whom keeps it on the same wall as my poetry, whom loves both equally.

If you could get this to Petra I would like to give her another poem, the poem I wrote for my mother-n-law for her birthday.

A fine and Lucky Day
Like a thousand rain kisses upon my face
The dew-drops dropped dew
Blanketed by a shimmer of Irish Gold
I was greeted with the color of the morn
Yes it was a fine and lucky day

I never saw a rainbow spew its color array
I never saw such beauty as I did within this day
Blanketed across in golden rows
Lilies prancing in a picture show
Dancing for my delight

Silly as an awakened girl
I took off my shoes
And twirled with joy
In a festival of reds, purples, and blues
Peddles of posies glanced
A I tapped my toes
And with them I romanced
To the flowered music

I never saw a rainbow spew its color array
I never saw such beauty as I did within this day
Blanketed across in golden rows
Lilies prancing in a picture show
Dancing for my delight

Like a thousand rain kisses upon my face
The dew-drops dropped dew
Blanketed by a shimmer of Irish Gold
I was greeted with the color of the morn
Yes it was a fine and lucky day

Boyish I clapped Encore

Dedicated to Darlene Conlogue, (My Maria) on her birthday.

Thank You
Nancy A. Lamkin
